1> I get caught on the wave immediately after taking off. → I don’t understand how to get over, break free, or finish when the wave breaks in front of me. → I’d like to know the ideal way to break through a broken wave and how to respond appropriately to it at my current level.
A
There are two reasons why you might catch a wave immediately after taking off. One is a slow takeoff. Some people blame it on paddling strength, but that’s one option. However, what’s even more important is finding the wave quickly and paddling quickly. Since propulsion is key to takeoff, statistics show that starting paddling 3 to 4 seconds earlier than usual can help you maintain roughly double your usual speed. Another factor is the direction of the nose when taking off. If it’s straight, you’ll get caught in the wave unless you’re aiming for a bottom turn. To be precise, tilting the nose about 45 degrees from your usual angle is said to be effective when you want to sail sideways after takeoff.

2> I tend to surf by trying to go sideways immediately after takeoff, resulting in pointless pumping movements. → I’m not gaining speed in line with the force of the wave. → I’d like to know the principles and effective ways to gain speed during each movement, such as takeoff and upswing.
A
This is a time when you need to think about what’s important in surfing after takeoff, plus what tricks you should practice next. Pumping is fine if it’s intentional, but if it happens spontaneously, it’s because you haven’t decided on your next move. In this case, I recommend carving or cutbacks. Pumping itself is a technique used when you’ve lost power, so I think U’s current focus should be returning to a position where the wave has power and then performing the necessary maneuvers. Doing so will clear all of the questions in this Q.

3> Your form is lame → Instead of lowering your hips to lower your line of sight, you bend your hips and lower your head, preventing your center of gravity from resting on the board. → I’d like to learn a form that looks cool and is suitable for surfing. → I’d like to learn it properly on land, if possible.

From what you’ve written, doesn’t it seem like your head is pointing out that you should lower your hips a little? In surfing, lowering your hips increases stability. Some people say it also increases speed, but that’s not true at all. The height or lowness of your hips needs to be adjusted depending on the location, the waves, and the maneuver you want to perform. In terms of the nuance of cool, I think a higher hip position can be expressed in the sense that it improves the ability to bend your knees inward and rotate your upper body, which are considered cool. U-kun is incorporating skateboarding into his training. Since he wants to learn on land, I recommend practicing skateboarding with a slightly elevated hip posture, imagining it as surfing.

4> He has absolutely no idea how to take his line after takeoff. → He’s only been going sideways for now, so I’d like to learn reasons and examples for how to take the right line on certain waves.
A
As he gradually improves, he’ll be able to decide his line to a certain extent before entering the water and set up for takeoff. After observing the ocean that day, he’ll decide whether he wants to speed up and ride to the end, or whether he wants to practice tricks. The key to imagining is to look at the ocean and then decide. Regarding U-kun’s current ability to skate sideways, he should choose waves that seem a little too fast and practice going faster. Or, he could choose slower waves and practice carving and cutbacks. I think the most effective way to improve is to practice one of these two patterns and focus on what U-kun’s current challenge.

5> I don’t have a current challenge or goal. I’d like to think about the challenges I have in mind for points 1-4 above, and what my immediate, future, and ultimate goals are, along with the challenges and practice methods to achieve them.

My ultimate goal is competing in the All Japan Championships and passing Level 1.
My future goal is passing Level 2 and winning the Open or B Class.
Just before the event, I’ll make a good cutback and increase my speed with upstrokes.
I know you won’t be able to go to the ocean very often, but please do as much as you can. Take swimming lessons to improve your paddling power, incorporate explosive training, continue practicing skateboarding, and regularly submit your form checks to our online coaching service so we can make corrections.
